The R.E.A.D. programme - Barita Education Foundation's methodology

The R.E.A.D. programme is a balanced and integrated language arts programme in which, listening, speaking, reading and writing are interrelated. Its goal is to produce life-long readers, writers and problem solvers. Children's reading abilities and the strategies they bring to the task of reading are assessed followed by diagnostic teaching.

THE R.E.A.D. PROGRAMME AT WORK
The programme has seen major success at the Early Childhood Level. The following graph highlights improvements in the Reading Levels of students at one of the schools where the programme has been implemented. Please note that pre-primer is the first stage in learning how to read and primer is the reading level below Grade One that children are expected to reach before entering Grade One in our Primary Schools.

The graph shows that in1999 prior to the introduction of the R.E.A.D. programme, of the 33 students entering Grade One, approximately 75% were non-readers. With the implementation of the programme, significant improvement was evident by 2004 where of the 50 students participating in the programme, approximately 84% of these students entering Grade One were reading at and above their grade levels.

Barita is proud of the success in the schools we presently serve and will continue to duplicate these efforts in all the schools we enter.
